southern Utah highlights, part 1

This entry contains pictures from merely one day in southern Utah.  Here is what I could see in one ordinary, Utah day (Saturday):
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park:

I only include one photo of the following, but it was perhaps my favorite part.  I loved seeing the Aspens changing colors amidst the sturdy old evergreens.  Dixie [...]

southern Utah highlights, part 2

In Zion National Park, my coworker and I were hiking a trail to see three sets of emerald pools.  (I decided the “emerald” part referred to the algae growing on the water.)  We accidentally got off the trail, so we had to take a shortcut back.  The shortcut entailed scooting down a big rock.  I [...]

My coworker says this is a polygamist compound, where a man can live with his many wives.  I found that hard to believe…but my coworker is a native Utahn, has lived in Utah for several decades, and probably knows her stuff.  I would like to give these residents the benefit of the doubt, though, so together [...]

prayer for safe travels

This morning I shall embark upon a southern Utah road trip with my coworker.  It lasts from Friday to Tuesday.  We are traveling from church to church to talk about legislative issues that relate to our faith, and how congregants can get involved.  I’ll also tell younguns about the US-2 program and encourage them to [...]

autumn begins

Today I spent a lot of time outside. First I went to a park and fed a loaf of stale wheat bread to the ducks, geese, pigeons, seagulls, and sparrows:

(Those two ducks were engaged in a lovers’ quarrel.)
After that I drove around looking for a hill to hike. I had a couple false starts, but [...]

I have been married to Bill for 24 years.  He was born and raised in St. Helens, Lancashire, England.  He was my writing assignment in the 5th grade.  After writing to each other for more than 19 years, and after visiting each other and [...]

root beer kegger

Here is the house where Robby and I met three years ago:

We met at an annual root beer keg party held at the college’s Spiritual Growth House.  (Technically, three years ago that fell on September 16.  But this year it falls on September 19, tonight.)  Now he and four other guys live in this house, [...]

one mo’ time

I wrote about six columns for our campus newspaper during my time there.  This may be my seventh, published posthumously (or post-graduation-ly).  I’m glad they saved it and published it even though I’m gone.  And I feel proud when I look at the little bio. at the end:
Religion courses provide insight

what seems like stormy weather…

I have lived in Utah for 32 days now, and of those 32 days, only four have included stormy weather or rain.
Four.  I can’t even count that low.
The rest of the days have been sunny and pleasant.  (Compare this to my poor parents’ weather in Homer, AK…and I’m glad I live in the desert.)
On Thursday [...]

happy birthday, David!

Today my oldest brother turns 28.  As a celebration of his life, I would like to offer one of my favorite memories of him.
One summer day, our two other brothers and parents weren’t home.  I decided I wanted to swim in the aboveground pool in our backyard.  Rather than use the ladder, I climbed over [...]
