Went to Cecret Lake again, with a different group of Mt. Olympus Presbyterians. I want to go on this hike once more before summer’s over—when my brother and his fiancee visit. I figure it’s a pretty easy hike, and during their visit they won’t have much time to adjust to the high altitude, so easier [...]

Mt. Olympus…and we live to hike another day
Posted in Utah, emotions, food, friendship, nature on July 18, 2009 | 9 Comments »
We did it. We hiked Mt. Olympus. Started at 5:45 a.m., took enough breaks so we didn’t die, got to the top about three hours later, spent 45 minutes lunching on the summit, and finished the day after a total of eight hours. Picked the perfect day, too. Not. Sunny and 101 degrees at least! [...]
We came, we saw, we camped.

Heather and I went on another hike with the Mt. Olympus Presbyterian hiking group Thursday, on Mill B North Fork Trail to Overlook about five miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon. That wasn’t enough to satiate our appetite for the outdoors. The following day, we drove to the Stansbury Mountains (North Willow Canyon) to camp out [...]

My three brothers, two parents, and one doggie were finally reunited after almost a year apart. I was also reunited with Ohio, my home state, the place in which I’ve spent 95.4% of my life. Blessings from the trip:
The family bonding, including laughing hysterically during a game of Loaded Questions.
Bonding with my college gal pals, [...]

On Monday my parents flew here from Alaska for a six-day visit, their first time “outside” in almost a year. Yesterday we set out for Zion National Park, about a five-hour drive from my apartment. It would be my second visit, their first.
Here I am modeling the extremely hip and practical backpack my brother Jon got [...]
a bright start to the weekend…despite the clouds

Free bagel Fridays at Einstein Bros.! (I have a coupon that says you can reuse it till April 24, as long as you come in before 11 a.m. on Fridays.) I got up early this morning to walk several blocks to the nearest venue. The rainy, wet snow didn’t deter me. The nightcrawlers languishing on [...]
dreary hike

A hike in February just isn’t that scenic. The trail was mostly slushy snowy ice, stained brown from mud and who knows what else.
I found these great chocolate-covered raisins, though:
That reminds me of Steve Carell on Anchorman, when he says, ”Sorry, Champ—I think I ate your chocolate squirrel.”
Here’s a gorgeous view of the valley pollution:
All that [...]

One of the volunteers in our food pantry is back east this weekend, so he and his wife asked me to dogsit/housesit for them. Their lovable golden retrievers, Moose & Abby, are making my weekend extra sweet. Because of the vow of poverty we missionaries take, we aren’t allowed to accept money for services like [...]
Stupid SuperBowl.

A SuperBowl party hosted by three guys is bound to have a lot of bacon products. They made potato skins with cheese and bacon on top…mashed potatoes with cheese and bacon mixed in…a cheeseburger pizza with bacon…and I forget what else. My stomach hurts. Mom, for the record, I brought grapes.
Here we are enjoying the 3D [...]

I wish I could relive many of the moments on my Christmas visit to my parents’ home in Homer, Alaska, just two weeks ago.
